For Immediate Release August 27, 2011 President Obama Signs Massachusetts Emergency Declaration

The President today declared an emergency exists in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and ordered federal aid to supplement commonwealth and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from Hurricane Irene beginning on August 26, 2011, and continuing.

The President's action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in the entire commonwealth.

Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency.  Emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent federal funding. 

W. Craig Fugate, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named James N. Russo as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area.

For Immediate Release August 28, 2011 President Obama Signs District of Columbia Emergency Declaration

The President today declared an emergency exists in the District of Columbia and ordered federal aid to supplement district and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from Hurricane Irene beginning on August 26, 2011, and continuing.

For Immediate Release August 29, 2011 President Obama Announces Intent to Nominate Alan Krueger to Lead the Council of Economic Advisers

Today, President Obama will announce his intent to nominate Alan B. Krueger as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA).  Following his confirmation, President Obama will designate Dr. Krueger as Chairman of CEA.  Dr. Krueger will be a key member of the President’s economic team, bringing a wealth of knowledge and decades of experience to the challenge of creating jobs and promoting economic growth.

“I am pleased to nominate Alan Krueger to lead the Council of Economic Advisers. As one of this country’s leading economists, Alan has been a key voice on a vast array of economic issues for more than two decades,” said President Obama.  “Alan understands the difficult challenges our country faces, and I have confidence that he will help us meet those challenges as one of the leaders on my economic team."

If confirmed, Dr. Krueger will continue the CEA’s important work of developing and offering the President economic advice on the formulation of both domestic and international economic policy. The Council bases its recommendations and analysis on economic research and empirical evidence, using the best data available to support the President in setting our nation's economic policy.

Dr. Krueger is the Bendheim Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University, where he has held faculty appointments in the Economics Department and Woodrow Wilson School since 1987.  He is also the founding Director of the Princeton University Survey Research Center.

Dr. Krueger previously served as Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy and Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of the Treasury (2009-10) and as Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of Labor (1994-95).  While serving at the Treasury Department, Dr. Krueger worked on the economic analysis of a variety of programs, including the HIRE Act, the Small Business Lending Fund, Build America Bonds and the Car Allowance Rebate System, or “Cash for Clunkers.”

Dr. Krueger was the Chief Economist for the National Council on Economic Education (2003-09) and elected a member of the Executive Committee of the American Economic Association (2005-07).  In 2002 he was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Russell Sage Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the American Institutes for Research, and he has served as an editor of numerous leading economics journals.  Dr. Krueger received a B.S. from Cornell University's School of Industrial & Labor Relations (1983) and an A.M. (1985) and Ph.D. (1987) in Economics from Harvard University.

PRO address: Observation of 9 / 11 with national service

WASHINGTON-In of this week address, President Obama called the American people in the spirit of service and remembrance together, how approach we us the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.  All Americans can pay tribute to those, who lost their lives during the 9 / 11 Serve.Gov by visiting opportunities, to find in their own communities.  By even the smallest of actions, we can get back the sense of unity that followed the attacks, and show that our common ambition today is only as strong as ten years ago.  Americans can gather again this solemn anniversary with service, and towards a bright future as a nation.

In just two weeks, we come together as a nation, the 10th anniversary of the September of 11 attacks.  We will remember the innocent lives, we lost.  We will be with the families who loved you.  We will honor the heroic first responders, rushed to the scene, and so many stored.  And tribute for our troops and military families and all those who safely and strongly have served numbers over the last decade, around us.

We will also remember, as the worst terrorist attack in American history brought the best of the American people.  As Americans donate snake, blood.  How voluntary drove across the country, create even hand.  Donated as students their savings.  Collected such as municipalities, communities and companies of food and clothing.

We were, and the outpouring of generosity and compassion reminded us that in times of challenge, we proceed together, Americans as a people.

These 11, Michelle and I is the commemoration at ground zero in Shanksville, at the Pentagon to join.  But even if you can be in New York, Pennsylvania, or Virginia, every American can be part of this anniversary.  Once again, the 9 / 11 will be a national day of service and the memory.  And in the days and weeks ahead, people across the country - in all 50 States - communities and neighbourhoods, the victims of 9 / 11 to honor, and on the strength of our nation with service and love come together in their to confirm.

Volunteers help restore a Community Center in Minneapolis.  In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, will hammer them shingles and lay floors, to give families a new home.  In Tallahassee, Florida, she will build care packages to our troops overseas and their families here at home.  In Orange County, California will be to renovate it houses for our veterans.  And once again, Michelle and I look forward to accession, as well as a local service project.

There are so many ways to get involved, and every American can do something.  To learn more about the ways find out where you live, just go online and visit Serve.gov.  Even the smallest act of service, the simple act of kindness, is a way to get those honor we lost; a way to share this spirit of unity, followed on the 9 / 11.

On this 10th anniversary, we can still major challenges as a nation.  We are of the worst economic crisis in our lifetime arise.  We take the fight to al-Qaeda, ending the war in the Iraq and begins to bring our troops from Afghanistan at home.  And we're working here at home newly create the foundation of our national strength.

None of this will be easy.  And it is unacceptable that the Government alone.  Seen as we have after 9 / 11, America's strength was always the character and the compassion of our people.  So as we this solemn anniversary, let us call this spirit once again.  And let us show that the feeling of community that we need in America is not a fleeting moment; It may be that a lasting virtue - not just in one day, but every day.

The President today declared a major disaster exists in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and ordered the Federal Government, the Commonwealth and local recovery efforts in the area of Hurricane Irene hit to complete starting on 21 August 2011.

The President action provides federal funding to affected in the municipalities of Caguas, Canóvanas, Carolina, Cayey, Loíza, Luquillo, and San Juan.

Grants for leaving on time and home repairs, low-cost loans for uninsured property include support losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners, who recover from the aftermath of the disaster.

Federal funding also is Commonwealth and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations cost-sharing for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities, that of Hurricane Irene in the districts of Aguas buenas, Carolina, Cayey, Ceiba, Comerio, Juncos, Las Marias, Luquillo, Morovis, Naguabo, Orocovis, Utuado, Vega Baja, Villalba damaged.

A cost-sharing is federal funding basis for mitigating measures of the danger to the entire community.

W. Craig Fugate, administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, Justo Hernández named as the Federal Coordinating Officer for the Federal Republic of recovery in the affected area.

FEMA said that damage continue surveys in other areas and other communities are named for the help are completed according to the estimates.

FEMA said that citizens and entrepreneurs, the losses in the designated communities suffered can start application for help morning of online registration at http://www.DisasterAssistance.govor by calling 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or

1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for hearing and speech impaired.  The toll free phone numbers work from 07 to 22 (local time) seven days a week until further notice.

For Immediate Release August 27, 2011 President Obama Signs Maryland Emergency Declaration

The President today declared an emergency exists in the State of Maryland and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from Hurricane Irene beginning on August 26, 2011, and continuing.

The President's action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives and to protect property and public health and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in the counties of Baltimore, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, Worcester, and Baltimore City.

Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency.  Emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent federal funding.

The President today declared emergency exists in the State of New York and ordered federal, State and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions, which by Hurricane Irene starting at 25 August 2011, to supplement.

The President action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, to coordinate Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), all disaster relief, the the purpose of alleviating the plight and suffering by the plight of the population and support authorized necessary emergency measures in accordance with title V of the Stafford, to save life and property and public health and safety to protect, to reduce or the risk of a catastrophe in the Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, stave off Nassau and Suffolk.

In particular, FEMA is authorized, mobilise and at its discretion, the equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the effects of the disaster.  You will receive emergency protective measures, including direct government support at 75 percent federal funds.

For Immediate Release August 26, 2011 Readout of the President's Call with IMF Managing Director Lagarde

The President spoke to International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde today to discuss the global economic situation and recent developments in financial markets.  As this was their first conversation since her appointment as Managing Director on June 28, the President congratulated Madame Lagarde on her new role and reinforced the importance of close cooperation between the United States and the IMF.  The President and the Managing Director agreed on the need for policies that foster growth and job creation in the near term, while securing medium-term fiscal consolidation.  They also concurred on the importance of rebalancing global demand towards emerging markets.
